Ants

ants-Ants are insects that belong to in the order Hymenoptera, along with bees, wasps and sawflies. Scientists believe ants evolved from wasps in the Cretaceous Period, about 110 million years ago. The earliest fossil ants have been found in North America amber, which has been dated at 94 million years old.

For most people ants only become a problem when they enter buildings in search of food and water or when they build their nests in buildings or gardens. Ants can be attracted to a wide range of foods with different species having preferences for sugars, proteins, fats and oils. During extended dry periods they will also search for water. In many species once an individual has found a desirable food source it will return to the nest and recruit nest members to help gather the food. This can result in large numbers of ants rapidly appearing around an item, sometimes with long trails of ants between the nest and the item of interest.

There are numerous species of ants regarded as pests in New Zealand and can be one of the more difficult pests to control. They have a very structured caste system with each member of the caste responsible for a specific role in their society. Ants can live for long periods setting up new nests and colonies. Most infestations become severe if not treated. They can enter your home in cracks and crevices, setting up colonies in areas such as wall cavities and ceiling voids.

Bed Bugs

bedbugs-Bed bugs are wingless insects, roughly oval in shape, 4-5mm long when fully grown. They are rust brown in colour and change to a deeper red brown following a blood meal. Bed bugs are blood feeders and are most active at night or in the early hours before dawn, but if starved for some time they may be active during the day. They are attracted to body heat and the carbon dioxide in expired air, which is how they find their host. To obtain a blood meal the bed bug pierces the skin of the host and injects saliva. This saliva has an anticoagulant property which makes the blood flow more easily. Bed bugs ingest their meal rapidly only taking 5-10 minutes to engorge themselves. Their bite is painless but becomes itchy and swells into a reddened wheal. Unlike the random pattern of bites made by mosquitoes, bedbugs tend to leave orderly rows.

The female in her lifetime may lay 2 to 500 eggs which usually hatch within 7 to 30 days, depending on climatic conditions. Adult bed bugs can live for approximately 6-12 months. Bed bugs will hide (and lay eggs) in a variety of household objects close to where humans sleep such as mattresses, bed frames, furniture, behind skirting boards, loose wallpaper and floorboards, and in cracks and crevices of walls. They can be transported all over the world via travellers luggage, clothes etc. Allergies are rare to bed bug bites but sometimes people will experience irritation and swelling at the site of the bite.

Cockroaches

cockroach-Cockroaches are close relatives of termites and belong to the insect Order Blattodea. They represent a primitive and highly successful group of insects whose origins extend back at least 300 million years. Most pest cockroaches originated in tropical or subtropcal Africa.

Their wide distribution and close association with humans, coupled with the high frequency with which they carry human diseases, in and on their bodies, have given them a very high pest status in most parts of the world.

While there are about 3500 species of cockroach worldwide, only about 10 species have seriously exploited the dwellings of humans.

  • German Cockroach - probably the most wide spread and successful cockroach. Adults are light amber-brown with body length 12-15mm.
  • American Cockroach - probably the largest cockroach that infest dwellings. Adults are red-brown with body length 35-40mm.
  • Smokybrown Cockroach - An adult Smokybrown cockroach grows to approximately 35mm and is usually dark brown in colour.
  • Oriental Cockroach - An adult Oriental cockroach grows between 20-25mm and is dark brown to black colour.

Price guideline for cockroach pest control (excl GST):

Fleas

fleas-Fleas are a type of wingless parasites belonging to the order of insects called Siphonaptera, which means “wingless siphon”. They feed off the blood of humans and animals such as dogs and cats. Since fleas use a wide range of hosts, diseases can be transferred from one host to another. Fleas are known to transmit tapeworm larvae and, uncommonly, the disease murine typhus. They are most notorious for transmitting “bubonic” (Black Death) plague from wild rodents to humans through the world in the 14th century causing the deaths of over 200 million people.

Now, these insects are better known for their irritation and pest status worldwide.

Fleas are light brown to mahogany in colour and roughly oval shaped. Their laterally flattened appearance enables them to quickly move through the host’s hair. Measuring 2-8 mm in length, the adults are entirely covered with a series of bristles and combs that assists them in clinging to the host.

There are three main species of flea that infest humans:

  • Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis)
  • Dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis)
  • Human flea (Pulex irritans).
A flea bite is intensely itchy and secondary infections caused by scratching are common.

Price guideline for flea pest control (excl GST):

  • 2 to 3 bedroom house -  $145  to  $235
  • 4 to 5 bedroom house -  $235  to  $295

Rats & Mice

ratsThese animals are well adapted to living in very close association with humans, sharing their food and shelter. Through history, rats and mice have been responsible for enormous losses of food and, owing to their ability to transmit diseases to humans by a variety of means, enormous losses of human life.

Rodents consume 10 per cent of their body weight each day, with the average rat eating about 30 grams a day. An infestation of only 5 rats can produce approximately 73,000 droppings and 27 litres of during a year.

Rodents are destructive, causing problems such as electrical fires from gnawing on wiring & contamination of all food related products.

The rodents that are of great concern in many countries, are:

  • NORWAY RAT - Also referred to as sewer rat, water rat and brown rat. This is the largest of the 3 species with small ears, a blunt nose and its tail shorter than its body. Most of these rats are greyish brown on their back and pale grey on the stomach.
  • ROOF RAT - Also referred to as house rat, ship rat and black rat. They are grey in colour, with a slender body, large thin hairless ears and a pointed nose. Their tail is always longer than their body.
  • HOUSE MOUSE - Also referred to as the field mouse. This species is the smallest of the three rodents. It has small feet and a small head.

Price guideline for rat and mice pest control (excl GST):

  • 2 to 3 bedroom house -  $145  to  $235
  • 4 to 5 bedroom house -  $235  to  $295

Spiders

spider-Spiders belong to an ancient group of animals called the Arachnida. Arachnids include scorpions, ticks and mites, harvestmen and false scorpions. Worldwide there are about 36,000 spiders. Almost all spiders possess venom for the purpose of subduing their prey - normally insects. This makes spiders one of the most beneficial of invertebrate groups. Spider venom is occasionally used against humans. This usually happens when the spider is trying to defend itself. While many spiders are not able to penetrate human skin with their fangs, those that can occasionally inflict painful and, in rare cases, dangerous bites.

Only a few species, including the Redback Spider and some funnel-web and mouse spider species, can inflict bites that are potentially fatal to humans. One of the most dangerous of all is the Sydney Funnel-web Spider. There have been no fatalities from Sydney Funnel-web bites since the development of effective antivenom.

Funnel-Web:

  • Female 35mm - Male 25mm.
  • Ground dwelling. Aggressive in summer and autumn.
Red-Back:

  • Female 10mm - Male 3mm.
  • Found under rocks, logs, rubbish in dry and sheltered areas.
White-Tail:

  • Female 20mm - Male 12mm.
  • Found under bark, rocks, in gardens.
  • Will wander inside home.
Mouse:

  • Female 20mm - Male 15mm.
  • Often mistaken for Funnel-Web.

Borer

Borer StyledThe Borer (common house) are pests of major economic importance in New Zealand and the significance of this has is not yet been adequately recognised. With New Zealand houses getting older the damage to timber accumulates and with these attacks the timber becomes progressively weaker. It is not uncommon for weather boards, floorboards, joists and other structural timbers to need replacing due to weakness caused by borer. The borer larvae create holes and labyrinths which allows water to penetrate many timbers and increases rot by fungi.

Borer larvae (woodworm), spend after 2 - 4 years tunnelling inside the wood and will then exit as the adult beetle via a round hole 1 - 2mm in diameter. The now adult borer emerge in order to breed, will not eat any more timber and will die within 3 - 4 weeks.

The other borer known as the Longhorn borer.  These beetles include the Two-Toothed Longhorn, Ambeodontus tristis, Burnt Pine Longhorn and Huhu grub beetles. The larvae of these beetles feed on dead timber. The Two-Tooth is a major pest that damages timbers in buildings and in the timber industry.

There are 180+ Longhorn beetle species endemic to New Zealand. The Longhorn family is a large and diverse beetle family. They are long, with narrow shaped bodies and very long antennae. Adult Longhorn beetles may be found on flowers where they feed on nectar. The huhu beetle is one of the largest New Zealand beetles.

The labyrinths and flight holes created by the Longhorn beetles are much larger than house borer and this is because of Longhorn beetles larger size. The Two-Tooth borer larvae often cause severe damage to rimu floors and other timbers.  The Two Tooth borer flight holes are approximately 3-4mm across and the flight holes of Longhorn beetles tend to be oval rather than round.

The damage caused by the Two Tooth borer beetle larvae and other Longhorn beetles can be controlled by the same treatment as for common house borer.

Flies

Fly StyledFlies are one of the most common and well-known insects in the world.  The fly is found on every continent with the exception of the innermost polar regions of the Arctic Circle and Antarctica. There are more than 240,000 different species of fly worldwide, with only around half of these having been actually scientifically documented.

Flies are known pests worldwide.  They are generally connected with dirt, decay and disease, as many species of fly are known to carry disease due to their ingestion of animal faeces, and connection with decaying bodies.

The fly is an omnivorous animals that will eat almost anything from nectar of plants, to sap and even animal blood. Flies are able to prey on such things at it uncoils it's long, straw-like tongue which then sucks the liquid into the fly's body. The baby flies or maggots, are known to feed primarily on decomposing matter such as excrement and flesh.

Flies are small in size and due to it's size and abundance, the fly is preyed upon by a wide variety of predators around the world.  These include amphibians such as frogs, toads and newts, fish that eat flies that land on the surface of the water, reptiles such as lizards and small mammals.

Flies have an extremely short lifespan, only living for about a month. The female fly lays her eggs in decomposing material, both plants and animals, which hatch very quickly. The eggs hatch into fly larvae which are more commonly known as maggots and quickly transform into an adult fly. It is thought that the process from egg to fly takes just under 2 weeks.
